Origin of Clary Sage oil: Clary sage, native to southern Europe, is a stout biennial herb that grows up to 1 meter (3 feet). It has large, hairy leaves and small blue/ white flowers growing directly off the long, thin stem. Clary sage is cultivated for oil production in France and Russia. Clary sage derives from the Latin 'Claris' that means 'clear' or from the Greek 'Skeria' meaning 'hardness', referring to the hard parts of the flower petals. Clary sage was highly esteemed as medicine in the Middle Ages. It was used by the Germans as an additive to cheap wine to make it taste more like Muscadel and as a substitute for hops in England in beer brewing. In Jamaica Clary sage was much used among the local people, for cooling and cleansing ulcers and inflammation of the eyes.
